Influencers forced into climbdown over scathing Hamptons dinner review (2024)

A pair of famous food influencers' scathing takedown of a $2,000 Hamptons dinner was riddled with inaccuracies.

The VIP List, run by Maeghan Radice and Audrey Jongens, both 26, made two glaring mistakes in their abrasive video review of Maverick in Montauk

Their clip claims the lavish meal, which the influencers say was the worst they've ever had, cost $2,000. But a spokesperson for the women admitted the final total was actually $1,326, or $1,613 with tip - 30 percent less than their video claimed.

The VIP List - known for their affected accents and 'Go cry about it!' catchphrase - also moaned to their 456,000 followers their appetizers took three hours to arrive.

But their PR has since contradicted them, telling DailyMail.com that the food actually arrived a full hour and ten minutes earlier, appearing after a still-lengthy one hour, 50 minute wait.

The VIP List claimed their dinner at a Hamptons restaurant they hated cost $2,000 - but it the check actually amounted to far less

The popular influencers were also caught out after claiming their appetizers had taken three hours to arrive - with the real wait time a far shorter one hour 50 minutes

The New York City-based pair vehemently deny the restaurant's claims they trash-talked the eatery in the hopes of a freebie.

Their spokesperson said: 'The girls have never nor would ever demand free food. They wouldn’t have gained as much success as they have with that kind of behavior.'

Questioned by DailyMail.com about The VIP List's mistakes and whether viewers could trust anything else they said, their spokesperson claimed the reviewers are mere 'comediennes' - despite their takedowns causing angst among restaurateurs.

They said: 'Their commentary and jokes and at times exaggeration are meant to be taken accordingly.

'So if an app (appetizer) took two hours and they said 3 it’s meant to express the same point. I think we can both agree an app shouldn’t take two hours.

'Which it did: Their bill with tip came to $1613.53 so they actually tipped more than 20% which doesn’t seem consistent with the accusations of their rudeness, and if the seafood tower wasn’t taken off would’ve been closer to 2k which is what they said.'

The VIP List complained that a lavish $200 seafood tower they'd ordered collapsed on their party, damaging their clothing with seafood sauces.

Maverick accused the group of playing with the seafood tower and even suggested they'd deliberately sabotaged it, before excitedly filming the aftermath - but The VIP List denied their allegation.

The $195 tower was later taken off the check.

As well as the wait time, the pair lashed what they said was flavorless food - although Maverick claims the hungry influencers almost cleaned their plates.

The VIP List, run by Meg Radice and Audrey Jongens, known for their aggressively 'honest' and famously obnoxious sounding food reviews, stirred controversy with their recent video, describing their alleged '$2,000' Hamptons dinner of 'flavorless food' at Mavericks, where a seafood tower apparently 'collapsed' on one party guest

But the restaurant has refuted these claims and asserted that none of the details in their review align with reality - while providing Dailymail.com with their own detailed minute-by-minute account of the evening

The chaotic evening began when the group arrived at their 8pm reservation 20 minutes late with an incomplete party - according to Mavericks.

The restaurant, forgoing the 15-minute cancellation grace period, sat the party down no longer than five minutes upon arrival.

At 8:25pm, the group started their evening with a round of co*cktails and then demanded a round of shots, which Mavericks does not serve, but did so to accommodate them, the restaurant recounted.

'At 9:22pm one of the guests approached ownership and basically proceeded to blackmail and demand that the meal be fully comped or else they would receive a bad review from two of the party guests who was told to the team to be a food influencer duo, Maverick's Brand Manager, Ella Stearns, told Dailymail.com.

'The management team denied this request for free food.'

The VIP List have insisted to DailyMail.com that this allegation is baseless - and say they'd never have reached their level of TikTok fame by being so dishonest.

'When the tower collapsed, they were fully ready with their flash cameras to record the commotion, seemingly so like it had been orchestrated,' said Stearns.

After the dramatic ordeal, the party boldly demanded the dish be removed from the check - despite 'consuming it in totality with the exception of one small piece,' according to Mavericks.

The Mavericks team's official restaurant visit was documented, with their seated time noted at 8:22 PM and their payment completed by 11:18 PM - meaning the entire dining duration was two hours and 52 minutes, which contradicts The VIP List's assertion of waiting three hours for appetizers and five hours for the entire meal.

In response, The VIP List has now been forced to backtrack some of their claims while justifying others as 'exaggeration' for comedic relief.

'They are classified as comedic food critics, so the tonality and delivery is apart of the brand. This was an overall terrible experience for them, and they were honest.'

'We understand that Mavericks is upset about the review but maybe the effort should be in trying to do better rather than justify an off night of food and terrible service. The pictures don't lie.'

Mavericks claims this was due to the group refusing to order their meal in entirety and instead insisting on simply ordering their appetizer first.

'They demanded to put in a seafood tower and four tartares but their server let them know that they would need to put the full order in order to pace out the meal. The party refused and went on to complain about the timing in between courses,' Stearns told DailyMail.com.

Mavericks was called one of Montauk's 'most anticipated new restaurant,' by Forbes and Hamptons.com , before it launched in 2023

The VIP List backtracked their claim that the seafood tower appetizer took three hours like they said in the video review. In an email to Dailymail.com, they admitted it was closer to an 1:50 minutes to arrive

MAVERICKS MONTAUK RESPONSE TO SCATHING RESTAURANT REVIEW BY FOOD INFLUENCERS 'THE VIP LIST'

The reservation was made for 8PM and the group arrived 20 minutes late with an incomplete party. Forgoing the 15-minute cancellation grace period, the Mavericks team sat them no longer than 5 minutes after arrival.

At 8:25PM, the group started their evening with a round of co*cktails and then demanded a round of shots, which Mavericks does not serve, but did so to accommodate them. They then demanded to put in a seafood tower and four tartares but their server let them know that they would need to put the full order in order to pace out the meal. The party refused and went on to complain about the timing in between courses.

At 9:22PM one of the guests approached ownership and basically proceeded to blackmail and demand that the meal be fully comped or else they would receive a bad review from two of the party guests who was told to the team to be a food influencer duo. The management team denied this request for free food.

At 10:01PM, the seafood tower arrived at the table fully intact. The group was then seen playing with the structure, shaking it until it fell over. When the tower collapsed, they were fully ready with their flash cameras to record the commotion, seemingly so like it had been orchestrated. The Mavericks team apologized, moved them to a new table, and let them know they would happily take it off the bill regardless of the questionable circ*mstances.

Additionally, although they claim in their post that nothing was eaten due to inedibility, the items were in fact, consumed in totality with the exception of one small piece. They ate the food, so they were in fact asked to pay for it. They also inaccurately described the menu items including the steak being drowned in butter (there is no butter on the steak) and the wagyu steak tartare as vegan, just because it was topped with beet puree.

Despite them saying in the post that they had to wait over three hours for their appetizers, the beverage/food timing was paced as they do with all reservations, with 20-30 minute gaps in between beverage, appetizers, entrees, etc. The Mavericks team even has their total time in the restaurant logged officially on the POS system – they were seated at 8:22PM and paid at 11:18PM. The duration of their total dining experience from being seated to leaving was 2 hours and 52 minutes; saying that they waited 3 hours for their appetizers and five hours for their total meal is factually incorrect.

Additionally, the total bill was $1350, inclusive of tax, not $2000 as claimed.

The entire management team stayed on top of the table throughout the entire evening, not letting a few moments go by without checking on them. Overall, the team is super disappointed, but not surprised, as this content doesn't accurately reflect what took place that evening or the high quality service and hospitality standards that Mavericks holds.
