In comparison with previous records at this particular period of the year, present results are more than favourable. In every department Inquiry was keen, particularly in the farmlet section, where a considerable amount of business was completed, the Horsley Estate at Fairfield accounting for the bulk of these purchases. Following this, seaside, and lakeview lots Interested a number of buyers, who completed contracts for lots at Gymea Bay, Narrabeen, and the Tuggerah Lakes. Residential sites of various grades were selected at Bankstown, Carllngford, Eastwood, Killara, and St.

Sir, Both of your correspondents who write on the deputation to the Federal Minister for Customs take the point that the proposed tariff alteration on printed matter strikes specifically at literature.
Both admit that the booksellers of Australia have been making a good thing out ot bookbuyers by charging above English prices. One draws a herring across the trail by Inferring that it has been possible to get a 30 per cent, discount from some English shops. For some time past I have been dealing directly with English booksellers (not getting the 20 per because of the little tariff wall set up by local booksellers on their own account. I saved considerably. It is indeed good news to learn that the booksellers propose to drop their own "tax on education." It has had a long run.
Printing broadly covers two fields the common or (jarden printing, at times technically well done, but meretricious and ephemeral; and reproduction of literature, which Is book printing. As for advertising matter the persiflage of printing. It can be taken for granted that If an article Is Imported, and bears a duty, surely the advertising matter that accompanies should also bear Its duty. Granted the policy is right. If commerce needs tariffs to maintain it, the malntainer of commerce, printing, needs its tariff.
A tariff on the printing gives industrial occupation Just as does the tariff on the articles. In the position as It stands, from tariff policies, book printing also calls for Its tariff. A duty on books, Imported In bulk for sale, does not place a ban on literature. The importer has only to have the printing done in Australia (as the same manner as a like tariff operates in the United States), and the literature educates in the same way as though it were printed abroad. There is more in the need for a duty on books than the stimulation of Industry.
I am aware that in this contention that It touches on the vexed question of taxing art. Book printing is the basis of all printing, and if there were more serious book printing in Australia, Australian printing would itself become a more serious factor in national life. So far, Australia has produced practically no internationally known fine printing or fine printers. And although the market for fine printing Is universal, nature, and man, Is wasteful of effort to produce the flower; much seed must be thrown In the wind for some to take root. Man Improves on nature by making a garden; a little tariff shelter.
At the present time, not only do books come in from abroad untrammelled, but as often as not the Australian author sends his work abroad to be printed. The Australian printer can print his works just as well as the overseas Drlnter. Sir, Mr. Froggatt's timely article In Thurs day -neraia- is one oi the strongest arguments in support of the Linnean Society's resolution, which suggested the setting apart of Crown lands for the "preservation, cultivation, and exhibition of native flora Thp long list of reserves for "preservation" only emphasises the absence of any provision for tue ouier two purposes sec out, cultivation and exhibition. Beyond a "Gazette" notice setting out the boundaries of a reserve, and a green line drawn round the area on the departmental maps, nothing has been done to improve such areas, or to render them fit for cultivation and exhibition of the indigenous vegetation. The present scheme contemplates only one area, with a possible extension later to include country, the geological formation of which favours a flora not to be found on the sandstone In the vicinity of Sydney.
This first or experimental area should De witmn easy reach of the capital, but distant enough to render it less likely to be raided by careless crowds of holiday-makers, whose only thought on seeing a native flower is to pluck it. This area should be carefully surveyed from a botanical point of view, and portions set apart for the massed cultivation of selected groups of the plants naturally growing there. Imagine the effect of a hillside covered with Christmas bush in full bloom, a gully with one side devoted to wara-tahs and the other to' boronia. a glen of cab bage-tree palms, a creek bordered with tree-ferns, a cliff dotted with rock lilies, and topped with great rows of gymeasl This Is the scheme carried out In the Kirstenbosch Garden of South Africa, on which the Linnean society idea was cased. 1 am, A.

Sir, In your correspondent's description of city boundary stones I think a serious error nas crept in re cne stone tnac was supposea to stand outside the Duke of Cleveland Hotel, at the corner- of Dowllng and Cleveland streets. Rod fern I have a distinct recollection of the stone standing at the corner of Bourke and Cleveland streets, Redfern, out side Ward Boundary stone inn, at tnac corner.
The stone and the Inn disappeared about the same As the stone was really in Redfern, the beat person to confirm this would be the Town Clerk of Redfern (Mr. P. W. Orlcrson). who is a very old Identity.
