Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros Guide - Season of Discovery (SoD) & Classic Era - Warcraft Tavern (2024)

Welcome to the WoW Classic Era Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros guide! This guide will teach you all you have to know about the legendary mace of Ragnaros, how it can be attained, and what steps you must follow on your epic journey of crafting one of the most dreaded weapons on Azeroth.

How to Craft Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros (Classic Era/SoD)

Unlike other legendary weapons that may be found in dark caverns or forgotten tombs, Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros has to be crafted by the player, requiring a rather extensive amount of materials to be created. The weapon can only be crafted by those who dare venture forth into the Molten Core and defeat its denizens, with one of the conditions for crafting the weapon being the destruction of the Fire Lord Ragnaros himself to gain his precious Eye of Sulfuras.

Firstly, to craft Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros, you will need to acquire the Sulfuron Hammer. This item can be crafted by any blacksmith, provided they have access to the Plans: Sulfuron Hammer. The plans can be acquired by purchasing them from Lokhtos Darkbargainer inside The Grim Guzzler tavern found in the Blackrock Depths dungeon. To get to him, you will need to venture forth inside the Blackrock Depths dungeon and reach into the Shadowforge City part of the instance.

However, Lokhtos Darkbargainer won’t give you the plans unless you bring him a Sulfuron Ingot, which can be acquired from Golemagg the Incinerator inside Molten Core. Since the Sulfuron Ingot drop is not a 100% guaranteed drop, you may have to kill the boss a couple of times to get it.

Once you acquire the Sulfuron Ingot, you will have to visit Lokhtos Darkbargainer and initiate the “Give me the contract” dialogue. Upon initiating the dialogue, you will be given a quest item named Thorium Brotherhood Contract which can be swiftly completed by talking with Lokhtos Darkbargainer again. Upon completing the quest, you will receive the Plans: Sulfuron Hammer as a reward.

Once you learn the plans, presuming you have a 300 skill in Blacksmithing, you will be able to craft the first required item, the Sulfuron Hammer. It is worth mentioning that you don’t necessarily have to craft it yourself, as any other player can craft it for you, assuming they are trustworthy.

This is where the annoying part of the journey starts as you will have to gather a substantial amount of materials in order to create the Sulfuron Hammer. While some of the materials can be easily farmed, others can only be created by alchemists once a day, with their overall value being extremely high. Be ready to spend a lot of gold or get your friends to help you! By far the most expensive material required will be the Arcanite Bar, which is also the material that requires Alchemy to be created.

List of Required Materials to Craft Sulfuron Hammer

Some of the materials can be crafted/gathered in the open world while others require you to venture forth once again into the Molten Core. As mentioned previously, the Sulfuron Ingots can be acquired from Golemagg the Incinerator while both the Lava Cores and the Fiery Cores can be acquired from both Trash Mobs and Bosses inside the Molten Core. The Dark Iron Bars can be simply smelted by anyone with Mining, requiring you to gather Dark Iron Ore while the Blood of the Mountain can be gathered by mining Dark Iron Deposits. The Essence of Fire can be acquired from Fire Elementals in the open world but it can also be acquired from Trash Mobs and Bosses in the Molten Core.

Lastly, the Arcanite Bars are the hardest materials to acquire as they require an alchemist to be created, with the process having an internal cooldown and requiring 1 x Thorium Bar and 1 x Arcane Crystal. Luckily, the bars can be bought, meaning that you can acquire them quite easily if you have a large amount of gold.

Once you acquire all the materials, you can either craft the Sulfuron Hammer yourself or give the materials to a blacksmith and have him do the work for you. However, one final detail remains, as the hammer can’t be crafted on any type of anvil. You will have to venture back into the Shadowforge City and craft the item upon the Black Anvil.

Acquiring the Eye of Sulfuras, Crafting Sulfuras

Once you have the Sulfuron Hammer in your possession, the most daunting task awaits you, acquiring the Eye of Sulfuras from Ragnaros. While fighting the Fire Lord may not seem like much of an intimidating task if you already cleared the entire Molten Core, the issue lies in the Eye of Sulfuras, as its drop chance is unbelievably low.

Nonetheless, once you manage to kill Ragnaros enough times to get the Eye of Sulfuras to drop, all you have to do is find a nice spot to commemorate the moment and click on the Eye of Sulfuras while having the Sulfuron Hammer in your bag to create Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros!

Changes to Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros in the Season of Discovery

While the method to obtain Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros is the same in the Season of Discovery as it is in the Classic Era version of the game, the item itself is vastly different in SoD!

The old Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros was replaced by a newer version, specifically tailored to enhance multiple classes. While the ones that can even hold such a weapon are scarce among those on Azeroth, the new version of it, Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros has multiple on-equip effects that are vastly superior to its former version.

The new version has been specifically made to now be viable for Feral Druids, increasing their Attack Power by a considerable amount. This results in both Feral Druids DPS and Tanks being able to skillfully use the weapon, no longer being considered a meme for even attempting to acquire it. Additionally, besides its well-known effect that hurls fireballs at the user’s foes, Sulfuras, Hand of Ragnaros now also debuffs the target with an effect that increases all Fire and Holy Damage taken by 30 whilst also placing a DoT effect. This new debuff not only aids the bearer of the weapon but also his allies.

Lastly, the Fire Damage retaliation effect is better suited for Feral Druid Tanks as a proper threat generation tool, as DPS Specializations wouldn’t have much use for it in any PvE scenario. Besides PvE encounters, the on-equip effect which procs the retaliation Fire Damage is much more suited for any PvP encounter against melee aggressors, as it can slowly trickle away the health of a fast attacking foe.
